My Background

I am a very patient, persistent, and gentle teacher. (Very important: if you're looking for someone strict, loud, or demanding, then my studio is not for you!)

I work with each student at his/her own level. I make students aware of the standards they need to meet before leaving each assignment, and then I let each student choose for themselves how quickly or slowly they want to meet that standard. In nearly 40 years of teaching, all my students, regardless of individual challenges, have received consistently high marks in any evaluations they've received. For example:

ABRSM: Merit
NGPT: Excellent Plus through Superior Plus
DSMTA Piano Festival: Superior Plus
DSMTA Theory Festival: 100%

I don't enter my students in competitions. Most students do not benefit from competitions, and none of us need that kind of stress. If I feel you need to be in competitions, I can recommend appropriate teachers for you from my extensive experience evaluating students at festivals, competitions, and juries.

My students do share their wonderful accomplishments in informal studio recitals three times a year. In their weekly group sessions they get experience in playing for each other; they also learn how to listen and make positive comments to each other.

Music theory and music history are an integral part of every lesson, and are more formally addressed in the group sessions.

I use a wide variety of teaching materials, drawn from many years of research and attendance at seminars given by colleagues in the countless professional organizations to which I've belonged. This breadth of experience accounts not only for my versatility as a teacher, but has also put me in high demand as an adjudicator, organization officer, clinician, and mentor of less experienced teachers.
